Medan – The International Sustainability Conference (ISC) FEB USU 2026 continued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with two learning sessions exploring the balance between cultural values and commercial interests in business, as well as the role of social entrepreneurship in community-based development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The first session featured a presentation entitled “Balancing Cultural and Commercial Imperatives in Business,” delivered by Tui MacDonald. The session focused on balancing cultural values with commercial interests in business operations. This discussion was relevant to the challenges faced by businesses in developing their activities while preserving the cultural values that form an integral part of community identity.

In the following session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hairunnizam bin Wahid presented “Social Entrepreneurship, Community-Based Development, and SDGs.” The session explored the relationship between social entrepreneurship, community-based development, and the achievement of the SDGs. Social entrepreneurship was discussed as an approach that connects economic activities with community needs and empowerment.

Through these two sessions, ISC FEB USU 2026 provided valuable perspectives on the importance of considering cultural and social dimensions in business development. The discussions broadened participants' understanding of how economic activities can go hand in hand with efforts to create meaningful benefits for society.

The event aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by promoting perspectives on responsible business practices, as well as SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through its emphasis on cultural values and community-based development. Furthermore, the discussion on social entrepreneurship supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by highlighting the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainable development.
