Thesis and Dissertation Writing Workshop Strengthens Postgraduate Research Competence in Accounting at FEB USU
The Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FEB USU), organized a Thesis and Dissertation Writing Workshop on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Prof. Dr. Suhadji Hadibroto Hall, FEB USU. The activity forms part of the study program’s continuous efforts to strengthen academic quality and foster a strong research culture among postgraduate students.
The workshop featured Dr. Saidatunur Fauzi Bin Saidin, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Accounting and Finance, Universiti Putra Malaysia, as the keynote speaker. In his presentation titled Development of Questionnaire Survey & Structural Equation Modeling, he discussed the development of research instruments and the application of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in academic research.
The event was attended by Master’s and Doctoral students in Accounting who were at various stages of their thesis and dissertation preparation. Academic supervisors and lecturers also participated in the workshop to provide guidance and enrich academic discussions throughout the session.
During the workshop, participants gained in-depth insights into key aspects of research methodology, including questionnaire design, types of research questions, validity and reliability testing, and data analysis techniques using both Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM). Participants were also introduced to the interpretation of statistical outputs such as reliability, validity, R², Q², and path coefficients, which are essential components in thesis and dissertation research.
In addition to enhancing students’ research competencies, this activity also contributes to the Faculty’s Key Performance Indicator (KPI) 2, which measures student engagement in academic activities beyond regular coursework, such as academic conferences, scientific publications, and collaborative research initiatives.
Through this workshop, students are expected to produce higher-quality academic research and be better prepared to publish in reputable journals as well as present their work in national and international academic forums.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by improving the quality of higher education and research capacity, as well as SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through international academic collaboration and knowledge exchange with institutions such as Universiti Putra Malaysia.
