Medan – Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FEB USU), Dr. Abdillah Arif Nasution, S.E., M.Si. Ak, CA., QGIA, CHRS, has joined a research team developing technological innovations that have received funding through the Technology Push Program. His involvement demonstrates the contribution of FEB USU lecturers to interdisciplinary research collaboration in supporting the development of innovative technologies that benefit society.

According to a publication on the official Instagram account of Universitas Sumatera Utara (@official.usu), Dr. Abdillah Arif Nasution is listed as a research team member in two innovation proposals: SWART (Smart Waste Bin with Artificial Intelligence of Things), which received funding in 2026 (Batch 1), and SIMPEL (Information System for Monitoring and Predicting Household Electricity Consumption Based on IoT and Generative AI), which received funding in 2027 (Batch 2).

SWART was developed by utilizing artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to support smart waste management. The use of these technologies has the potential to improve waste management effectiveness through a more integrated system that responds to environmental needs.

Meanwhile, SIMPEL focuses on developing an information system to monitor and predict household electricity consumption using IoT technology and generative artificial intelligence. This innovation is expected to support more measurable energy consumption monitoring and encourage more efficient electricity use.

Both innovations involve collaboration across faculties at USU. In the SWART team, Dr. Abdillah Arif Nasution is listed as a member of the team led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Fahmi, S.T., M.Sc., IPU. In the SIMPEL team, he is listed as a member of the team led by Dr. Ir. Tigor Hamonangan Nasution, S.T., M.T., IPM. This collaboration demonstrates the importance of interdisciplinary synergy in developing technological solutions that address societal needs.

The involvement of a FEB USU lecturer in both teams represents one form of academic community participation in the university's research and innovation ecosystem. Contributions from various fields of expertise are expected to strengthen the development of technologies that not only focus on technical aspects but also consider their benefits, effectiveness, and potential for broader implementation.

This achievement aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through the development of innovative technologies; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through support for improved waste management; and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, through efforts to promote more efficient resource management. The development of SIMPEL is also relevant to SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, through its support for monitoring and improving the efficiency of household electricity consumption.
