The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FEB USU), in collaboration with the Regional Office of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) 1, successfully organized a workshop and meet-and-greet event themed "The Role of LPS."

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), successfully organized an academic workshop aimed at strengthening financial literacy and enhancing academics’ understanding of the role of LPS in maintaining financial system stability.

The event, held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at Prof. Dr. Suhadji Hadibroto Hall, USU Campus, Medan, was attended by 138 academics from 30 universities, including institutions from outside Medan such as Universitas Efarina and Universitas Simalungun. The workshop served as a platform to strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions and LPS in promoting financial literacy and public awareness of the national financial system.

In his remarks, Vice Dean I of FEB USU, Dr. Amlys Syahputra Silalahi, S.E., M.Si., emphasized the important role of academics in educating students about financial institutions, including LPS. He noted that a better understanding of LPS can contribute to increasing public confidence in the banking sector and strengthening financial inclusion through education.

The Head of LPS Regional Office I, Muhamad Yusron, expressed his appreciation for the participation of academics from various universities. He explained the strategic role of LPS in maintaining national financial system stability alongside Bank Indonesia, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and the Ministry of Finance. One of LPS’s primary responsibilities is guaranteeing customer deposits of up to IDR 2 billion per depositor per bank under applicable regulations.

The workshop also featured educational sessions delivered by Pramuji Novri Harlyanto, Head of the LPS Education Division, who explained the deposit insurance mechanism through simulation-based learning methods. In addition, Dr. Paidi, S.E., M.Si., facilitated a teaching resource forum aimed at enriching academic learning materials related to LPS and financial system stability.

Another key discussion focused on bank resolution policies. Suprianto, Acting Head of Bank Resolution Implementation Division II, presented LPS’s role in handling troubled banks, particularly following the enactment of the Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law (P2SK), which expanded LPS’s authority in bank restructuring and resolution processes.

This activity marks the beginning of a sustainable collaboration between FEB USU and LPS. Through this partnership, both institutions are committed to enhancing the quality of education, strengthening financial literacy, and increasing public understanding of the functions and responsibilities of LPS.

This initiative supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by improving financial literacy, strengthening academic capacity, and enriching learning resources in higher education. Furthermore, it aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through strategic collaboration between higher education institutions and public sector organizations in promoting sustainable economic and financial development.
