IAI 14th Congress Strengthens the Role of Accountants in the Sustainability Era with USU Participation

The 14th Congress of the Indonesian Institute of Accountants serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the role of the accounting profession in maintaining trust and integrity in the sustainability era, with participation from Universitas Sumatera Utara.
The Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI) held its 14th Congress from December 13–15, 2022, in Jakarta under the theme “Strategic Role of Accountancy Profession to Maintain Trust and Integrity in the Era of Sustainability.” The event served as an important forum to address global economic uncertainty while emphasizing the strategic role of the accounting profession in supporting sustainable development.
During the opening session, Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, highlighted the importance of preparedness in facing global economic challenges and appreciated IAI’s contribution to Indonesia’s G20 Presidency through its involvement in the Task Force Integrity & Compliance B20.
The congress was attended by key stakeholders, including government officials, regulators, and IAI members from across Indonesia. Thousands of participants joined the event, which also included the election of the National Board leadership for the 2022–2026 period.
The Chairman of the National Board of IAI, Mardiasmo, emphasized that sustainability has become a critical issue in the current global economic landscape. He highlighted the important role of accountants in maintaining public trust and enhancing transparency through the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance-based reporting standards.
In this context, IAI’s involvement in Indonesia’s G20 Presidency marked a significant milestone in promoting sustainability reporting globally. Through its participation in the Task Force Integrity & Compliance B20, IAI actively contributed to policy discussions related to ESG implementation.
The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sumatera Utara, also participated in this congress. The delegation included Prof. Erlina S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., CA, CMA; Dr. Syafruddin Ginting Sugihen S.E., MAFIS, Ak, CPA, CA; Dr. Rina Br. Bukit S.E., M.Si., Ak., CA; and Dr. Keulana Erwin S.E., M.Si., Ak, CA, CPA.
The congress also discussed amendments to the organization’s statutes, including the establishment of a Sustainability Standards Board aimed at supporting the development of sustainability reporting standards in Indonesia.
Through this congress, the accounting profession is expected to further strengthen its role in adapting to global developments and contributing to integrity, transparency, and sustainable economic growth.
