The Community Service (PkM) Team of the Accounting Study Program (ProAksi), Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FEB USU), conducted an educational activity entitled Introducing the Concept of Almsgiving through Islamic Financial Literacy for Early Childhood Students at SDIT Al-Musabbihin Medan on Thursday (July 30, 2026). The activity aimed to instill an understanding among students of the importance of sharing and social concern as part of responsible financial management from an early age.
The activity began with remarks from the Principal of SDIT Al-Musabbihin Medan, Drs. H. Syahril Manaf, M.Pd., who welcomed the implementation of the community service program. He stated that education combining financial literacy with Islamic values can serve as an effective means of building students’ character, enabling them to grow into responsible, disciplined, and socially caring individuals. Remarks were also delivered by Juwita Agustrisna, S.E., M.Si., representing the PkM Team, who emphasized the university’s commitment to implementing the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi) through activities that provide tangible benefits to society.
During the main session, Astuti, S.E., M.Si., delivered a presentation on the importance of sharing as part of Islamic financial management. In her presentation, the students were encouraged to understand that, in addition to using money wisely and saving, a portion of one’s income can also be set aside to help others through almsgiving. Participants were also introduced to the concept that almsgiving is not limited to giving away a portion of one’s wealth, but can also be expressed through various simple acts, such as helping parents, sharing food with friends, giving a smile, and doing good deeds for others.
The PkM Team also appreciated the Friday Almsgiving (Sedekah Jumat) tradition that has been implemented at SDIT Al-Musabbihin. Through this activity, students were encouraged to understand that the value of sharing is not limited to a routine activity every Friday, but can be practiced anytime and anywhere as part of developing a caring attitude toward others.
The activity was conducted interactively through discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and a quiz with prizes, which were enthusiastically received by the students. Their active participation in answering questions and sharing experiences demonstrated their strong interest in the material while creating an enjoyable learning atmosphere.
Through this activity, the ProAksi FEB USU PkM Team hopes that students will not only understand the importance of managing their finances wisely but also incorporate the value of sharing into their daily lives. The program also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through strengthening financial literacy and character education from an early age; SDG 1: No Poverty by fostering social awareness through the concept of almsgiving as a culture of sharing with others; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between higher education institutions and schools in implementing community service activities.
