The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FEB USU), will organize the International Summer Course 2026 from October 19–26, 2026, under the theme “From Local Heritage to Global Opportunities: Sustainable Business and Economic Development in North Sumatra.” This program serves as an international learning platform that integrates North Sumatra's local heritage, sustainable business development, and global economic opportunities.
The program is designed to broaden participants' understanding of regional economic development, social entrepreneurship, global marketing strategies, and the application of sustainability principles in the business world. Through a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural learning approach, participants are expected to understand North Sumatra's local economic potential while developing innovative ideas that can compete in international markets.
The International Summer Course 2026 will feature academics and practitioners from Indonesia and several other countries, including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. The speakers will share their perspectives and expertise in various fields, ranging from local heritage-based economic development, risk management and internal control, social entrepreneurship, and global branding strategies for local tourism to sustainability reporting, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and impact measurement.
The program will also cover sustainable business development, digital transformation for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the financial feasibility of local companies, and the development of local products and brands to reach global markets. These learning activities are expected to encourage participants to view cultural heritage and regional potential not merely as local identities but also as sources of innovation and economic opportunities.
As part of the learning experience, the program will introduce participants to the cultural and tourism assets of North Sumatra, including the Lake Toba area and the TB Silalahi Museum. These visits will provide opportunities to understand the relationship between cultural heritage preservation, tourism development, and the economic growth of local communities.
The program will adopt a hybrid learning format and run from October 19–26, 2026. Participants who meet the minimum attendance requirement of 80 percent and complete the final project will receive a certificate and academic credit equivalent to 3 semester credit units (SKS).
Through this program, FEB USU strengthens its role in promoting the internationalization of higher education while connecting academic knowledge with regional development needs. Cross-country and interdisciplinary collaboration is expected to generate new perspectives, expand academic networks, and encourage the development of sustainable business ideas that are relevant to North Sumatra's potential.
The International Summer Course 2026 offers participants an opportunity to learn, collaborate, and explore how local assets can be developed into global opportunities without compromising economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Supporting the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The implementation of the International Summer Course 2026 aligns with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Through international academic collaboration, entrepreneurship development, business innovation, and the promotion of North Sumatra's local heritage, this program is expected to encourage inclusive and sustainable economic growth while enhancing the region's competitiveness on the global stage.
